The Walt Disney Company is facing off against the Atlanta Braves ballclub in an effort to trademark, “BRAVE.” Disney is seeking to register the word, the title of a forthcoming Pixar animation film about a skilled archer caught up in a fairy tale, but has run into opposition from a baseball team that has used the plural form of the word for nearly a century. According to records at the United States Patent & Trademark Office, Disney has been registering different iterations and uses on “BRAVE” for the past year. Most recently, a registration attempt was made on October 20. Disney’s film is scheduled to be released in June, 2012. But the Atlanta team has indicated that it intends to oppose registration of the mark. The club has been granted until January 18th to file its opposition papers with the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board. Stitch Kingdom, a blog that reports about Disney matters, reports that “private negotiations between The Walt Disney Company and the Atlanta National League Ball Club are currently taking place.” The website also notes that the Braves don’t possess any trademarks on the singular use of “Brave” and that a Google image search failed to turn up any use of “Brave” merchandise. In the past, the trademarking of words relating to Native Americans has been controversial. For example, a panel at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Redskins’ trademark in 1999, ruling that the name and logo were offensive to Native Americans. After 17 years of fighting, a U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington allowed the team to keep its trademark. The Atlanta Braves are a franchise that has taken several names since its founding in 1871. The team has been known as the “Red Stockings,” “Red Caps,” “Beaneaters,” “Doves,” “Rustlers,” “Bees,” and finally, the “Braves.” The team first used the latter in 1912 when it was based in Boston. The team moved to Milwaukee in the 1950s and then Atlanta in 1966. Lately, the team has been a big media institution, purchased by Ted Turner in 1976, passed along to Time Warner through a corporate transaction, and sold to Liberty Media in 2007.
I believe that Walt Disney has touched every single life that nearly existed after ‘It All Started with a Mouse’. I challenge you to not smile when you say or think about the word ‘Disney’. He channeled our interests in himself in so many different ways through comics, cartoons, Mickey Mouse, television, feature-length cartoons, movies and Disneyland. He created a world in which we all wanted to be a part of and discover for ourselves. He gave hope and dreams to America and the World. He served his country and community, in more ways than one. Did you know that Walt served in the Military? Funny how his determination to help his country encouraged him to forge his mother’s signature in order to be a part of the American Cross. Walt Disney was a Man of the People. He proved that later in his years. He lived a life that so many of us could only hope to have accomplish throughout our lifetime. And on December 15, 45 years ago the whole World mourned the loss of a Legend, a Visionary, and a Dreamer. Walt passed from the dread of lung cancer and ever since then ‘Disney’ just hasn’t been the same. What most people don’t realized is how Walt changed and inspired so many of the lived that surrounded him. At the Studios in Burbank, CA there was no more laughter. Even Walt’s beloved favorites The Sherman Brothers were being rejected from the ‘Company’. No one truly knew how to deal with Walt’s passing, more or less deal with it. It was a dark age for the Walt Disney Company. My Grandfather helped clear the land for Disneyland with his tractor and was personally hired by Walt Disney himself. Even Walt’s legacy lived within our family bloodline. My Grandfather’s stories of Walt always perched interest in me when I was a child and I remember the day when I first laid eyes upon Disneyland, the place that laid in my dreams. It truly was magical. I too worked later on for the Walt Disney Company at Disneyland for 10 years. I may not have worked personally for Walt Disney, but I was guided by his beliefs and he was my mentor throughout my life. Yet, we all know that there is always light at the end of the tunnel! It’s 2011 and the 10th Disney Princess, Rapunzel has been added to the Royal Disney Princess Family. I think Disney has lived on and will continue to live on in all of us. It really is a ‘Small World’ after all. I’m sure that somehow you feel a connection to this man. He truly touched everyone and he continues to do it with his Spirit and Heart. In memory of this wonderful Man, Walt Disney, I’m placing two videos below. Richard Sherman playing ‘Small World’, only because it seems fitting for this posting and a Tribute to Walt Disney, something I put together. “It’s a Small World” by Richard Sherman Defying Gravity with Walt Disney– Written by It’s All About Tours LLC

They say everything is bigger in Texas, but Orlando would beg to differ. “The City Beautiful” has played host in the past to the world’s largest numismatic auction (that would be “coin auction” for you non-nerds), the world’s largest stormwater pollution prevention convention, the world’s largest yoyo collection, and the world’s largest kazoo band (I believe a UK act has since nabbed the title). The city also broke world records for the largest photo album and the world’s biggest smiley face. If you’re visiting Orlando, it’s clear your motto should be go big or go home. Here are five ways to join the world-beating residents of Orlando: Take Home Some Memorabilia From the World’s Largest Disney Pawn Shop Wouldn’t you love to bring home someone else’s used Disney World hotel bed spread? Okay, maybe that’s a little gross, but there are actually a ton of cool collectibles at Mark Pianko’s Theme Park Connection warehouse. He’s got everything from old employee costumes and uniforms, to window panes from restaurants, and a vintage 1982 Tron arcade game. The warehouse is 20 minutes from the Magic Kingdom and 30 minutes from downtown Orlando. Get Launched by the World’s Largest Slingshot This thing is so big you can actually see it from the interstate. Slingshot riders are flung nearly 400 feet into the air at a speed of more than 100mph. You can find the slingshot at Magical Midway. See the World’s Biggest Rubber Band Ball at Ripley’s Nicknamed “megaton”, this behemoth weighs nearly five tons and consists of over 720, 000 rubber bands. The ball was sold to Ripley’s in 2009 by a clothing store worker who spent approximately four years creating the multi-coloured monster. Visit the World’s Largest Entertainment McDonald’s & PlayPlace I wouldn’t spend a lot of time here, but it’s probably worth visiting just so you can say you went bowling at McDonald’s. Support the Largest Single-Site Employer in the United States Walt Disney World of course! The resort employs over 66, 000 magic-makers. It also provides work for a precocious talking water fountain, and you know how hard it is for talking water fountains find work these days. –By Donald Kennedy of Travergence–
